ABC News: Russian President Putin announces military operation in Ukraine

Putin has taken the control of Crimea and the Russian Duma has voted to use military force. President Putin has said that any attempts by NATO to interfere with Russian operations in Crimea will lead to ‘consequences the West has never seen’. Many countries are outraged against Russia’s actions including Prime Minister Boris Johnson and President Joe Biden.

Why they are at War?

The West is trying to lure Ukraine into the EU, Putin says, and that means Russia won’t allow Kyiv to move closer to the Western military alliance. Russia will be watching as the “illegitimate” Ukrainian regime implements democratic principles and rights, he says. Ukraine’s central government has struggled to assert its authority over eastern regions where pro-Russian protesters have raised flags over government buildings and set up checkpoints on roads.

Russian troops in Ukraine don’t obey Kyiv authorities, Putin says, adding that those forces “receive a large number of requests from different people and citizens asking for help. The first thing we do is try to talk them out of that.” “The reaction from NATO was swift and highly critical, with Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen calling it a blatant violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and international law. French President Francois Hollande also put Ukraine’s membership in the EU back on the agenda as a response to Vladimir Putin’s speech.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s off-the-cuff comments on this serious situation is quite unusual. Recently, Imran Khan is on a short visit to Russia. On landing he said “What a time I have come so much excitement.” The Russian official can be seen smiling and laughing in response to his remarks.

Final Thoughts

Although tensions between Ukraine and Russia can be really high sometimes, but we always hope for peaceful solution to the situation. Ukraine definitely lacks strong army and Ukraine has no nuclear weapons in contrast with Russia. However it is not a fact that this situation will result in utter chaos. Many people often forget that war brings devastation, ruining cities and infrastructure, as well as suffering and numerous casualties.
