When it comes to the security of your house, family, and belongings, door locks play a vital role. The actual debate is which type of door locks you should use. In that case, an in-depth research is necessary to determine which type of door locks provide the best security. Many different kinds of door locks are available, but unfortunately, most of them are not secure enough to keep intruders out.
Door Knob Locks
Knob locks are the type of door locks that is commonly found on interior doors. The main purpose of these locks is to prevent people from coming in without permission. However, they are not ideal for use on exterior doors. In fact, this kind of lock is not recommended for external use due to its limited amount of security. But if you want to install it on your front door you must use it with a deadbolt lock for extra security. In this type of lock, the lock cylinder is located in the knob instead of the door’s core.
Padlocks
Padlocks are a reliable type of lock that is portable, meaning unlike other types of locks, they are not permanently attached to the door or anything that it is used on. These locks are also called chain locks, combination locks, cylinder locks, or key locks. The most basic padlocks do not have any extra features like internal locking mechanisms. That is why they are less expensive than other types of door locks. Some are simple in construction and operation; others are complex with many layers of security. These types of locks are operated by a key, by the combination (via numerals or symbols), or by other security devices such as cards or electronic keypads. These padlocks are broadly classified into two types; key padlocks and combination padlocks.
Key padlocks work with a key that turns when inserted to release the lock. While the Combination padlocks use numerical digits and letters rotated to make a code to open or close the lock. Combination padlocks are good for situations and locations where keys are not practical. You can easily create a new combination at will, you don’t have to waste time looking for keys.
Padlocks are used for a variety of purposes like bike locking, car parking, office storage unit, warehouse, and construction project. Padlocks are also used for high security to cover things like electrical boxes in buildings or even large industrial containers.
Deadbolt Locks
Deadbolt locks are used to provide high levels of security on external and internal doors. They are found on most exterior doors and do offer a high degree of security. There are different types of deadbolt locks available in the market but most of them are single cylinder, double cylinder, vertical deadbolt locks. Other types are thum-turn only deadbolt locks, push-button deadbolt locks.
1. Single Cylinder Deadbolt Lock
Single-cylinder deadbolts are the simplest type of deadbolts available and are considered entry-level security. This is because single-cylinder deadbolts only have one lock mechanism that requires a key to be opened from outside. However, from the inside, it can be open by turning or twisting a knob. Single-cylinder deadbolts are designed for convenience and ease of use; however, they can also be vulnerable to certain types of forced entry attacks.
2. Double Cylinder Deadbolt Lock
A double cylinder lock, or double cylinder deadbolt locks, is a locking mechanism that is capable of locking from both the inside and the outside of a door. This type of lock has special components inside it. This component allows it to latch either inside or outside the door instead of being latched only on one side. Most double cylinder lock installations have two separate operating keys (one for the inside and one for the outside). This type of lock is highly recommended if your door is nearby a window through which anyone can open the door from inside easily.
3. Vertical Deadbolt Locks
Vertical deadbolt locks are the most common locking device found on residential doors. It is located on the inside of the door, just below the top edge of the frame. These locks are used to secure both inward as well as outward opening doors. Vertical deadbolts are also referred to as “passive” locks. Since they are designed to simply block and prevent entry by way of a latch bolt in conjunction with a strike or faceplate (depending on the type of lock installed).
4. Electronical Deadbolt Locks
Electronic locks, also known as keyless locks, do not require keys to lock and unlock them; instead, they have a keypad or card system in which you can use a special code or key. Most traditional locks will be on the same keychain and may make it easy for burglars to gain access to your home. Smart locks can alert you when someone enters and leaves a lock and are also useful in allowing you to keep track of who is entering.
