Sialkot city is an important manufacturing centre and economic hub in the region. It has one of the largest industrial areas in Pakistan, known as Sialkot Export Processing Zone (SEZ). Several industrial units are located here which produce high quality sporting equipment, surgical instruments, leather goods, hand tools and other consumer goods for commercial purposes for the domestic market and for export markets through private sector investment.
Location
This beautiful city is in northeast of Punjab, Pakistan. It is situated on the northern bank of the Chenab River and is flanked by Daska to its north, Bhalwal and Narowal to its east, Donga Bhaivian in the West and Dhurnal and Sambrial on its southern side. Also, Sialkot is one of the oldest cities in South Asia. This city was originally a Hindu settlement before being captured by Alexander the Great during his invasion.
The success of Sialkot as an industrial centre can be credited to its location and entrepreneurial spirit. Its location advantage includes ready access to trade routes along the historic Grand Trunk Road, proximity to Rawalpindi, and availability of raw materials through the markets of Kashmir, Multan and Lahore.
The City of Iqbal
Allama Iqbal, the philosopher-poet and inspiration behind Pakistan Movement, was born in 1877 in Sialkot Pakistan. His kashmiri family was converted to Islam from Hinduism in the early 1400s. The city also provided important military support to the Pakistan Movement in 1947. Other prominent personalities born in this city are Faiz Ahmed Faiz (poet), Shoaib Akhtar (cricketer), and Shahnaz sheikh (hockey player).
Industries
Manufacturing of sports goods seems to be a rising industry in Sialkot. A report by the Economist in 2010 ranked the city number one globally for sporting goods manufacturing (followed by nearby Faisalabad and Peshawar). The industry is based round Sialkot’s historic role as a centre for hand-sewn footballs, with local factories manufacturing 40–60 million footballs a year, amounting to roughly 60% of world production.
Moreover, Sialkot became the pre-eminent centre of the surgical instrument industry in South Asia, and by the end of the century it was producing half of all instruments used by hospitals throughout Pakistan. The city’s association with surgical instruments continues to this day.
Sialkot is also known as “Manchester of Asia” due to its flourishing textile industry. Sports clothes and footwear are among the other important industries that contribute substantially to the economy of Pakistan.
