Types
There are two broad types in terms of its settlement when mixed with water. These are Hydraulic cement and Non-Hydraulic cement.
Hydraulic Cement
Hydraulic cement sets very quickly as it cures. It is the most commonly used type and is one of the essential building materials in construction as it joins concrete elements together. You can use it to fill cracks and form solid concrete structures underwater or in the air. Example is Portland Cement also called as Ordinary Portland Cement(OPC).
Advantages of Hydraulic Cement
- It settles down very quickly and gets harden within few minutes when combines with water. If you use hot water it will settle down more quickly. Coldwater reduces the time of binding.
- It is used in the construction of your building’s load-bearing walls as it is strong and can support any type of load.
- It is used as a repairing material as it provides durable repair that will last longer. You can use it to fill any type of cracks and holes in concrete walls, floors, roofs, walls, bridges, and columns without the need for drilling or disruption of the structure.
- It is a cost-effective solution that will work on vertical applications.
- It provides smooth surfaces. Your floors will have a more even appearance as it completely covers the area You won’t have to worry about sanding or smoothing out the concrete after it sets.
- It can be applied to the beams of bridges, dams, and tunnels to prevent leaks.
- It becomes insoluble in water after settles down.
- It does not corrode or rust and shrink in any type of environment.
Disadvantages of Hydraulic Acid
- It hardens in 3-5 minutes, so it must be used within that time frame.
- This type is unsuitable for frozen surfaces or for areas where the temperature drops drastically within 48 hours.
- Not recommended for applications when the temperature is below 48°F.
- Not permeable to water.

Non- Hydraulic Cement
Non-hydraulic cement was formulated by scientists. It is a type that can’t harden when exposed to water. It is made by mixing gypsum plasters, ground lime, and other additives. It dries and reacts with carbon dioxide in the air to produce a hard, waterproof material resistant to chemicals after setting.
